History and symbolism

Neroli essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the beautiful white blossoms of the bitter orange tree. Although the oil itself became known in Europe only from the 17th century, the use of orange blossom dates back to the 11th–13th centuries, primarily within the healing and spiritual traditions of Arabic and Persian cultures.

During the Islamic Golden Age (8th–13th centuries), the flowers and their hydrosols were used:
